Making a Museum – Design Museum Gent

This unique book documents the spectacular transformation of Design Museum Gent.

This book is published to mark the reopening of Design Museum Gent in October 2026. It documents the transformation of a historical ensemble in the city center of Ghent into a contemporary museum. The project combines a new, connecting wing designed by Carmody Groarke and ATAMA with the restoration of the monumental buildings by RE-ST.

In addition to the architecture, the book highlights innovative processes such as the development of the circular Gent Waste Brick and unique collaborations with, among others, Bureau Bas Smets and Unfold. Essays by experts position the museum as a modern space for production and public exchange.

Featuring text contributions from the architects and designers, and essays by Beatrice Leanza, Nadine Botha, and Marc Dubois.
